Much Accomplished

“Manitobans deserve a government that listens to people. We deserve to have the best employment and education opportunities available. We are entitled to live in healthy communities where the young are encouraged, working families thrive and seniors are respected.”

- Jim Rondeau, 1999

Since then, Jim, together with the residents of Assiniboia and with his colleagues in the Legislature, has made every effort to ensure Manitobans have just the kind of government and community he described in 1999.

Enrolment at colleges and universities has increased 23%. Manitoba had the lowest unemployment rate in the country throughout 2002 and into 2003, and over 9,000 new jobs were created in the last year. There are now more child care spaces in Assiniboia.

Canadian Forces members and their families, many of whom live in Assiniboia, will keep their right to vote and retain their drivers license benefits while serving in other countries and provinces. Jim, along with Premier Gary Doer and Bonnie Korzeniowski, guaranteed this through introduction and passage of the Canadian Forces Personnel Act.

Locally, Jim is a tireless and, above all, an accessible representative. He established close working relationships with constituents and community, listening to suggestions and concerns people raise. He was there to help a seniors’ exercise group find affordable accommodations that saved them $2,000 a year in facility rentals. With his local counterparts in other levels of government, Jim secured funds for the expansion and renovations of the St James Centennial Pool.

Since 1999, playground and sports facilities across Assiniboia have been improved and made safer. Local young people are learning new skills, contributing to their community and having fun while taking part in after-school activities made available through Manitoba Justice’s Lighthouse program.

Assiniboia is a community that you can comfortably live, raise a family and be proud to call home
